Jamaican Ackee Trees For Sale

In Jamaica ackee is one half of the Jamaican national dish, Ackee and Salt-fish. As people visit the Island, and  the dish spreads around the world so does the popularity of Ackee and Salt-Fish. Visitors to the Island are exposed to this versatile and very unusual Jamaican dish. They are also educated on the safe use of the fruit. These visitors to Jamaica take home the taste and a love of the dish and share it with their friends and family. This is one of the common ways that Jamaican Culture is spread to other countries.

The arrival of Ackee to Jamaica

The ackee was brought to Jamaican as a cheep source of food for the West African slaves that had been brought to the Island to work the cane fields.. From Jamaica the tree spread to other islands in the Caribbean, Haiti, Trinidad, Cuba, the Bahamas, the Antilles, Central America, various South American countries, Florida and the Philippines. I get many requests from former visitors to the Island of Jamaica requesting information on the growing and preparing  ackee.

The ackee tree was first introduced to the British botanical society in Kew, by captain William Bligh of mutiny on the bounty fame. For this feat Bligh was rewarded by having the new African Plant named after him. The ackee plant was given the scientific name Blighia Sapida.

It is a beautiful tree with smooth grey bark. It grows to 50 feet. The tree grows well in tropical to subtropical areas and can grow up to 3000 feet above sea level. Ackee Leaf makes great headache medicine and eye dropsThe leaves are composite, and are seven to eight inches  long. They are shiny on the upper side and lightly hairy on the underside. The underside of the ackee leaf is rough to the touch. The top side is smooth and shiny.  The small bisexual and male flowers form pleasant-smelling white flower clusters 5-8 inches across. The fruit is pear-shaped with three distinct lobes. The fruit is 3-4 inches across. The unripe fruit is green and the seed mantle is closed. When the fruit is ripe it opens spontaneously, showing the black, shiny seeds, each surrounded by a cream-colored aril. They are similar to their distant relatives, the lychee and rambutan. Normally there are three seeds, but in 30-50% of fruits 1 or 2 of the seeds are very small or absent. The base of aril is attached on the stalk side by a pinkish orange membrane. When the fruit ripens it become yellow, then red. The fruit is eaten fresh, baked, boiled in milk or soup or processed into preserves.

The ackee tree Blighia sapida (synonym Cupania sapida, family of Spindaceae) comes originally from Ivory Coast and Ghana. The tree is planted there for shade and for its wood. In West Africa the green fruits are used for soap (they contain oil). The wood is not attacked by termites. The wood of the ackee tree is known in the lumber trade is Achin. Achin makes beautiful furniture. In 1793 the ackee tree was imported from West Africa to Jamaica as a source of food for the slaves in the Island.  From Jamaica the tree spread to other islands in the Caribbean, Haiti, Trinidad, Cuba, the Bahamas, the Antilles, Central America, various South American countries, Florida and the Philippines. Due to its toxicity the importation of this fruit into the USA was forbidden by the American Food and Drug Administration, for over 30 years. This is no longer the case.

Lifting of Ackee Import Ban

The import ban on ackee was lifted on August 1 2000. Since the lifting of the ban  on ackee by the  United States, many countries have tried to cash in on the potentially huge new market. But so far Jamaica has been the most prolific of them. With a export of three hundred million dollars a year. Ackee can actually be grown in limited areas of the United States. Generally speaking ackee can be grown in the deep south. See hardiness zone checker above.

The ackee connection would like to congratulate the Jamaican Track Team for their outstanding performance in the 2008 Olympics.
